2008 - In Review
Summer turned out cool, with temperatures near the Shore seldom reaching into the seventies. We had abundant rainfall in the early part of the season and moderate rains into July, with only August being mostly dry. A very slow spring delayed the onset of the berries, and it was already the first week in August when the thimbleberries began to ripen in earnest. The previous year’s harvest had been poor because of heat and dryness, and we were without the precious jam for half of June and all of July. Despite the late start, this year’s crop was bountiful, and we laid in a good supply against the vagaries of future seasons. The other fruit for the most part also fared well; only raspberries and blackberries were shy due possibly to the summer’s general lack of heat and to the drought of August. In general, however, it proved a very good year.
The moderate weather continued into an exceptionally glorious fall. The color was deep and rich this year, and the days mostly sunny. The flowers in the monastery garden were still glorious in mid-October for the recital. A patchy frost finally did in the dahlias near the end of the month, but the roses and mums soldiered on well into November.
It was good financially, as well, despite fears of a negative impact from high gasoline prices and a slowing economy. Revenue in July was significantly down from last year, but we had an extra busy August and a robust autumn. The beautiful mild weather brought customers to the shop through the final week of business. At the end of our busiest final day ever, the season’s revenue came to within one percent of last year’s all time high. In sum: another very good year which we hope continues into the Christmas season and into 2009!
